The current granddaddy of the 4X genre, Civilization 5 was an epic departure from its predecessors in employing a hex-based grid instead of the traditional square grid. Sure, it isn’t pretty to look at, but it’s pretty surprising just how fun a game where you essentially click on various shapes can be. ![]() Underneath all of these problems, however, is a deep 4X space game that has you colonising planets, researching awesome scientific discoveries, and trading and murdering your way up the proverbial food chain. ![]() Every playable race has its own series of quests that often take you from start to end of any given game, and gives you more immediate objectives to prevent players from getting too lost.Įndless Space has a lot of issues – its diplomacy doesn’t work all that well, the combat is as simplistic as it gets, and the aesthetics are downright boring. Another major mechanic that sets Endless Legend apart is its questing system. Among its standout features are the fact that almost every playable race has its own gameplay mechanics, a more tactical approach to battle, and its well-realised fantasy-based universe. A bit on the complex side when compared to other games in the genre, Endless Legend takes the refinement of Civilization 5 and adds a metric tonne of complexity to it. ![]()
